Context
In luxury hospitality, acoustics is the product.
A guest paying a premium rate is buying, among other things, silence. Noise between rooms, from corridors, from plant, or from the neighbouring property is the complaint category that most reliably damages a property's rating, and ratings drive the rate the asset can command.
This makes acoustic engineering a commercial discipline in this sector rather than a compliance one. Regulatory minima are a floor; the target is set by what the market expects, which is considerably more demanding, and it has to be designed in because retrofitting acoustic performance into a finished hotel is close to impossible without closing it.

New builds are subject to RE2020, and the existing estate to the tertiary decree with its annual declaration. Hotels are unusual in that occupancy varies enormously by season, which makes a naive reduction trajectory misleading and a substantiated modulation worth examining.
Refurbishment adds a constraint the sector rarely states out loud: the works happen while the hotel trades. A wing closed for a season is revenue lost twice over, once on the rooms and once on the reputation of a property that could not accommodate a returning guest. Phasing, acoustic separation of the works zone and night-time restrictions therefore shape the programme as much as the technical scope does, and they are decided at design stage or not at all.
Plant noise deserves separate attention. Heat pumps, chillers and kitchen extraction are the equipment most often at the origin of neighbour disputes, which in a hospitality context become a planning and reputation problem rather than merely a technical one.
