RE2020 for education buildings
Schools and colleges fall under RE2020, with particular attention to summer comfort in classrooms. ARKEMEP runs the thermal and LCA studies adapted to education buildings.
Profile
Schools are the least favourable case for summer comfort.
A school combines everything the degree-hour indicator penalises: high occupant density generating internal gains, occupancy through June and September, frequently single-storey construction with large glazed areas, and no mechanical cooling. Meeting the summer comfort requirement here is genuinely difficult, and it is the requirement that most often drives the design.
The levers are architectural before they are technical: orientation, external shading, cross-ventilation, thermal mass. Once the plan is fixed, the remaining options are expensive and partial.
Programme
The works window is the other constraint.
School construction and renovation happen in summer, between terms. That fixes the programme in a way no other building type experiences, and it means design decisions have to be closed early enough for procurement to complete before the window opens.
Indoor air quality carries its own monitoring obligations in school buildings, and acoustic performance conditions how well pupils hear a teacher, both measured on the building in use, not on the specification.
Use
The building is judged by people who occupy it daily.
School buildings receive an unusual amount of informal scrutiny: teachers, parents and pupils notice overheating, noise and stale air immediately and say so. A building that passes its calculation and fails that scrutiny creates a problem for the local authority that no compliance certificate resolves.
This argues for measuring after delivery rather than assuming: a summer measurement campaign in the first year identifies which rooms actually overheat, and small corrective measures at that stage are still cheap.
