Nurseries & early-years
A healthy, quiet, comfortable environment for young children

Nurseries and early-years facilities require excellent indoor air quality, acoustic calm and summer comfort for the health and development of young children. NORMAXIS designs the thermal, acoustic, ventilation and MEP systems to meet these demands.

Key issues

A healthy environment for the youngest.

Indoor air quality

Ventilation and material choices supporting regulatory indoor-air-quality requirements.

Acoustic comfort

Reverberation control and insulation for a calm environment supporting speech and rest.

Thermal & summer comfort

RE2020 thermal study and overheating prevention in a Mediterranean climate.

Context

Small occupants, strict air quality obligations.

Nurseries are subject to indoor air quality monitoring obligations that do not apply to most other buildings, because the occupants are the population most sensitive to it. That obligation is not satisfied by a specification: it is satisfied by measurement, on the building as delivered and in use.

The practical consequence is that ventilation design in a nursery has to be verifiable. A system that performs on paper and cannot be commissioned to demonstrate it will fail the obligation, whatever the calculation said.

Regulation

Air, heat and noise, all measured.

New facilities fall under RE2020. Summer comfort is a live issue: nurseries are occupied through the summer, often in single-storey buildings with large glazed areas, which is the least favourable configuration for overheating.

Acoustic performance matters for a reason specific to this sector, noise levels in collective childcare affect both the children and the staff, and the reverberation control that fixes it is an early design decision rather than a late correction.

Air quality monitoring in these facilities is periodic, which means it is not a one-off acceptance test but a recurring obligation over the life of the building. Design decisions that make measurement easy, accessible ventilation terminals, documented commissioning values, a system whose airflows can actually be balanced, reduce the cost of every subsequent campaign. Design decisions that make it hard are paid for repeatedly.
