ESRS E4 is widely seen as the most difficult CSRD standard: it requires companies to disclose their impacts and dependencies on biodiversity and ecosystems, and, where material, a biodiversity transition plan. Unlike climate, biodiversity has no single metric; the data is local, seasonal and multi-dimensional. NORMAXIS produces the underlying evidence through the proprietary BPS tool (Biodiversity Performance Score), operated by IRICE as an independent third party under ISO/IEC 17065, and connects it to TNFD, SFDR PAI 7 and EU Taxonomy DNSH criterion 6.

The BPS (Biodiversity Performance Score) assesses the state and management of biodiversity through 70+ criteria on an A–G scale, aligned with ESRS E4 and SFDR. Where biodiversity is material, ESRS E4 requires disclosure of impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities, with quantified metrics and a transition plan. Unlike climate, there is no single unit: biodiversity is reported through several indicators tied to particular places, which makes site-level data unavoidable.

That is the practical difficulty. A group can estimate its carbon footprint from purchasing data; it cannot estimate its biodiversity impact the same way. It needs to know which of its sites hold ecological value, and what it does to them.

Evidence

Where the data comes from decides whether it survives audit.

Site-level ecological data comes from field survey, not from desk estimation, and surveys follow the four-season calendar. Groups that start their E4 disclosure in the reporting year discover that the underlying evidence takes longer to produce than the report does.

Third-party verification changes the weight of what is disclosed. A biodiversity performance assessed by an accredited body enters a report differently from a self-declared figure, which is why the group keeps its certification activities in a separate entity.
